Crowns

A crown is like an artificial tooth and is usually used to replace teeth that have broken or been damaged by decay. Crowns can be made using several different materials so you can choose tooth-coloured ones for the front of your mouth, or ultra-strong ones made of gold, porcelain or a special dental composite material for crowns at the back. Your back teeth do a lot of grinding, whilst you’re eating, so that's why crowns at the back need to be so durable.

Similarly, in some cases, we may suggest you have an inlay or onlay made of gold, porcelain or composite instead of a traditional filling.

Inlays and onlays do the same job as fillings, repairing teeth damaged by decay, but they may be stronger and last longer than regular fillings - an important consideration if the damaged tooth is a 'grinding' tooth.
