Gum Disease

Gums are the firm, pink-coloured, fleshy tissues that surround the bases of the teeth.  When these become diseased (i.e. unhealthy), the gums can become red, swollen, and sore.  Indeed, one of the first signs of gum disease is blood on the toothbrush or in the rinsing water when you brush your teeth.

Most people will suffer from some form of gum disease.  It is a slow, progressive and largely painless disease.  Many of us will be victims to it without realising that we are.  However, the disease, and its management, is acheivable with the appropriate home care and dental health check-ups.

There are two main types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.  Gingivitis is the term used to describe the gums around the teeth becoming red and swollen (i.e. inflamed).  If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop into periodonatal disease.  In extreme cases, periodontal disease can result in teeth becoming loose and even falling out.

All gum disease is caused by plaque.  By brushing and flossing you can remove all the plaque from your teeth every day to help prevent gum disease.

Each time you have a check-up your dentist will assess the state of your teeth and gums.  They will ensure that the correct treatment is prescribed for you.
